CBD Oil for Dogs
CBD Oil is short for cannabidiol, which is a liquid extract that comes from special hemp strains of the cannabis plant family. Once the best CBD Oil is extracted from the hemp plant, the liquid (distillate) contains a variety of substances that we can then break down into two categories: cannabinoids and terpenes. There are over 100 cannabinoids known to exist, and of these, CBD has by far the most medicinal benefits. CBD Oil also has over 100 different terpenes, which is what gives the smell and taste factors to the plants. The CBD Oil for Dogs created is no different than the ones people would consume. However, you’ll find different concentrations to account for body weight difference.
CBD Oils are far more effective when paired with other cannabinoids and terpenes. This mix creates what is known as the entourage effect which strengthens the benefit of the cannabis plant. This gives you the widest range of help possible from the Hemp Extract resulting in what is known as Full Spectrum CBD Oil.
The isolated version of hemp CBD Oil has a hard time passing the blood-brain barrier for absorption, so its effects are stunted when compared to Full Spectrum. When other cannabinoids and terpenes are working together they are known for clearing cellular receptors so that CBD oils can combine more freely. Studies on this effect indicates that it can make Full Spectrum 5 times more powerful than its isolated counterpart.
It is important to note that pet CBD Oil, when it is extracted from Industrial cannabis Plants, has no psychoactive effects like THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). This is the biggest area of concern for many people who have researched the uses of CBD Oil for Dogs. Our Industrial Hemp Plants contain less than 0.3% THC which is the industry standard.
Scientists have confirmed that the endocannabinoid system & its receptors positively benefit from having these CBD Cannabinoids interact with the central and peripheral nervous systems. This is what allows the CBD Oil for Dogs to maintain a positive balance in the body and keep it at a healthy state, or what is known as homeostasis.

CBD Oil for Dogs is an all-natural plant-based extract that works by sending signals between nerve cells via a system of receptors activated by terpenes. Luckily the natural remedy inside these plants provides a great alternative terpene source, to assist the central nervous receptors, these control critical body functions such as immune response, pain sensation, appetite, memory, mood and more.
Research is still ongoing and there is no conclusive data that would allow for us to legally make any medical claims, however, we can reference the fact that many of the world’s leading universities and institutions are actively studying the possible wellness benefits of organic CBD Oil for dogs:
“There is no conclusive evidence to support official conclusions however, the FDA does “support the rigorous scientific medical research of marijuana (cannabis/hemp) – derived products”. Ongoing research at universities includes the potential uses for conditions such as:
Pain (e.g., arthritis, bone pain) Anxiety (e.g., separation anxiety, loud noises, fireworks, travel, crowds) Inflammation, Nausea and Vomiting, Loss of Appetite, Seizures, Convulsions, and Muscle Spasms. For more information on the current studies being held in regards to CBD oils checkout our scientific research library here.
With all of this being said, we can suggest that the evidence found has shown that CBD Oil for Dogs may help with many deficiencies that can occur within your Dog. This is done by supplementing your dog’s Health by using the receptors found in the endocannabinoid system. We will discuss further the major questions and topics of concern associated with CBD Oil for Dogs like; How Much CBD Oil Should I Give my Dog, Is CBD Oil Legal, What are the Side Effects of CBD Oil for Dogs, and What is the Difference Between Isolate, Broad & Full Spectrum dog CBD?
In mammals, certain messages are passed between nerve cells via a system of receptors which can only be activated by cannabinoids such as the ones from Full Spectrum CBD Oil. The messenger receptors are called cannabinoid receptors and the overall messaging system is called the endocannabinoid system, the body makes its own cannabinoids, however they sometimes degrade faster than they can be synthesized.
Luckily the natural CBD Oil inside a plant provides a great alternative cannabinoid source, to assist the endocannabinoid system, which the nervous system uses to control critical body functions such as: immune response, pain sensation, appetite, memory, mood and more.
Like previously mentioned above in the article, the Endocannabinoid System is located within all animals except insects. It is responsible for sending signals between nerve cells and is activated by specific Cannabinoids which is why Full Spectrum CBD Oil for Dogs was developed. By targeting this system we can improve the communication and create homeostasis within the body which allows for all of the other systems like the Cardiovascular and Respiratory System to function efficiently.
By supplementing the body with CBD Oil you can effectively help the rest of the body operate better! Ongoing research continues to show that the Endocannabinoid System can affect the following areas: Appetite, Sleep, Memory, Mobility, Immunity, and Pleasure.
The Ingredients that we use are chosen specifically for their ability to effectively activate the system, which is why we only use the most High Quality Full Spectrum CBD and Hempseed Oil in order to bring you the best CBD Oil for Dogs.

“My dog has been battling cancer for over a year now and I have tried many things to help him have a better quality of life. I can without hesitation say that this product has some wonders for him.”
Both Hemp and Marijuana are species of cannabis plants, and while they have the same cannabinoids and terpenes, the percentages and ratios differ immensely.
In particular, Hemp contains very low amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), where Marijuana contains higher percentages. High levels of THC results in the euphoria associated with marijuana. Hemp is grown already naturally low in THC, and we can reduce it even more with basic farming practices giving us the industrial version.
Marijuana has approximately 20-30 % THC vs. industrial hemp 0.01-0.3% THC indicating marijuana has one hundred to a thousand times more tetrahydrocannabinol than hemp, a significant difference.
This difference allows CBD oils to be completely safe for your Dog. Our naturally occurring CBD Oil is made with only the highest quality ingredients and it is Independently third party Tested multiple times in order to make 100% sure that your product is not only safe for your pet, but holds the highest standards of quality for your Dog.
You don’t have to worry about your CBD product when it contains under 0.3% THC. Fun fact: that tiny bit actually contributes to some big therapeutic benefits still classified as Full spectrum hemp.
Because CBD Oil comes from cannabis, people often wonder if it can cause a high or if it’s legal. The wonderful news is when CBD is derived from hemp, it cannot cause a high, and it is legal in the united states under the 2018 farm bill and over 40 countries worldwide.
Industrial Hemp Plants contain less than 0.3% THC which is what allows it to be classified as a Legal Substance in the United States.
Calculating the amount of CBD Oil for Dogs can be a bit confusing, especially since we have to take into account multiple factors like; your dog’s body weight, concentration needed, and other less common variables like the CBD brand. For this reason we have created a comprehensive dosing guide that is perfect for answering the question, “How much CBD Oil does my dog need?”
The quick answer can be found by getting the average dose for your dogs weight. This can be found easily by first entering your dogs weight and then selecting the exact bottle of pet CBD oil that you have purchased (125mg, 250mg, 750mg, 1,500mg, 3,000mg or 6000mg). After entering these two pieces of information you can then take into consideration the concentration that you want to give your dog. This can be found by looking at the same row that is defined for your dog’s weight and then choosing whether you would like to implement a minimum, low, average or maximum dosage.
When choosing to give your dog CBD you should take into consideration if your dog is barely starting out as some noticeable effects take time to arise. We always recommend dog owners starting with giving your dog a smaller amount and gradually increasing it over time to find the perfect dose.
You also should take into account that you should give them less if they are taking medications or other supplements. At the end of the day we can not clearly define a perfect amount for every furry friend but with these tools you will be able to find the most optimal dosing amount for your dog and their specific needs.
CBD oil drops make it very easy to customize your CBD dosage.
A big talking point for pet owners who love and use organic CBD Oil is its low potential side effects. In fact, the most common side effect of CBD for dogs is it just doesn’t do much for what your dog needs. It’s a pretty rare side effect because most times, the system can do with a helping hand in some way.
High dosages can cause tiredness where low and medium dosages are more likely to provide a slight boost in energy. While dogs rarely have issues sleeping, some pet owners find high dosages work well for keeping their dog calm.
Take note, when giving your dog hemp extract to avoid marijuana as products high in Tetrahydrocannabinol are not safe for dogs. Make sure those levels are always lower than 0.3% for any hemp CBD Products.
Like grapefruit, kale, and St. John’s Wort, CBD oils and others can interact with the same metabolic pathways that break down many prescription drugs, potentially altering their potency. That’s why we recommend discussing this matter with your veterinarian before using pet CBD products.
We believe high quality CBD oil for dogs means using hemp seed oil instead of MCT oil for the required carrier oil. Besides having benefits that can help with issues such as seasonal allergies, hempseed oil has cleaner fats that carry less risk of causing stomach discomfort. Some CBD brands like cutting costs with MCT oil, ensuring they’re not selling the best CBD oil.
We are an honest company and hope you choose our CBD Products over others. However, our main goal is to make sure all pets around the world are happier and healthier. So we want to show you exactly what to look for in the best CBD Products, even if that means you go somewhere else. Now, of course, all of Innovet’s CBD Oil Products meet these standards.
With that said, here are 4 Guidelines To Follow When Buying CBD oil for dogs:
99% of CBD products that claim to be organic actually are not. Organic certification by the USDA is the only way to assure that a CBD product comes from a hemp or cannabis plant, that was never exposed to toxins like pesticides and heavy metals like lead.
Both Hemp and cannabis plants have evolved a unique ability to absorb nearly every chemical or substance that it comes in contact with. That’s why it’s so critical to make sure you only use products that are USDA Certified Organic. Our PurCBD brand can be found by looking up the product name in the USDA organic integrity database.
There are many dangerous ways to extract CBD Oil such as butane and alcohol. However, the safest and most effective method is solvent-free CO2 Extraction, and it is why we use it for our CBD Oil for Dog Products.
Certificate of Analysis (COA):
Unfortunately, many companies lie about how much CBD Oil is actually in their product. That’s why a certificate of analysis is so important. This is awarded to companies that have had their CBD Oil for Dogs independently tested for quality, accuracy, and safety. You can find ours here.
A carrier oil like organic hempseed oil should really be the only inactive ingredient in CBD oil. Many companies cut corners by using MCT or coconut oil as a solvent carrier oil, so stay away from products containing this cheap alternative to hempseed oil. This helps them cut costs but as a result you are missing out on the safest, highest quality CBD Oil Products for your dog. Natural flavor dogs love.
Full Spectrum CBD has the most complete Entourage Effect and Isolated CBD has zero. Broad-spectrum CBD is CBD isolate with other cannabinoids or terpenes artificially added to make mimic full spectrum. However, broad spectrum CBD oil isn’t considered the best for making CBD oils for dogs.
Accordingly, broad-spectrum hemp oil has more effect than CBD isolate but still falls short of the superiority of full spectrum hemp oil. This is what makes all the difference when you are choosing which type of pet CBD Oil to give your Dog.
CBD oil for dogs works by interacting with endocannabinoid receptors in the central nervous system. This system is linked to many of your pet’s bodily functions, including the regulation of inflammation and pain.
This means that CBD for dogs may be useful for easing joint pain associated with arthritis. Speak to your vet about whether they think CBD for dogs may be useful in your pet’s case.
Unfortunately, because this is a supplement we’re not allowed to make medical claims regarding its use as a treatment or cure. However, this is the exact reason we began using this product on our own pets. (our founding pets were diagnosed with cancer; Maximus was 16 and Gordo was 8.) you can read more about our “inspired by” story with Maximus & Gordo.
We wish we could give you a definitive yes or no answer to this question; we know how terrible of an ordeal a pet seizure is to experience. Since we do not sell medical drugs we can’t make medical claims, but we do have pet owners using our product specifically for pets who suffer seizures.

We are an honest company and hope you choose our CBD products over others. However, our main goal is to make sure all pets around the world are happier and healthier. So we want to show you exactly what to look for in CBD, even if that means you go somewhere else. Now, of course, all of Innovet’s CBD products meet these standards. With that said, here are 5 Guidelines To Follow When Buying CBD oil for dogs:
Organic: The Hemp plant has a lot of amazing benefits, and one of those is it’s great at cleaning up toxic spills. This makes it so important that you only chose CBD oil derived from organic grown hemp free of any harmful chemicals.
Extraction Method: There are many dangerous ways to extract CBD such as butane and alcohol. However, the safest and most effective method is solvent-free CO2 extraction, and it is why we use it.
Certificate of Analysis (COA): Unfortunately, many companies lie about how much CBD is in their product. That’s why a certificate of analysis is so important. Inactive Ingredients: A carrier oil like organic hempseed oil should really be the only inactive ingredient in CBD oil. Many companies cut corners by using MCT or coconut oil as a solvent carrier oil, so stay away from products containing this cheap alternative to hempseed oil. We offer CBD oil made right, just CBD extract and hempseed oil that’s non-GMO and gluten free.
Full Spectrum CBD, Broad Spectrum CBD or Isolate CBD: The CBD with the greatest entourage effect comes from Full Spectrum Hemp Plants, this is because full spectrum hemp plants contain the widest variety of cannabinoids and terpenes. Broad Spectrum CBD will contain several of the plants compounds but not the whole array of cannabinoids and terpenes giving it the full benefits of CBD. Typically, this form of CBD will be entirely free of THC. Isolate CBD is the third form which is a pure form of CBD containing no other beneficial plant compounds including cannabinoids or terpenes.
Is Your Dog CBD Oil Human Grade?
PurCBD uses the most reliable suppliers for phyto-cannabinoid oil for humans. Everything from the ingredients to the bottle and dropper are human grade. As owners and staff of Innovet use PurCBD on ourselves and our own pets. Our goal has always been to make the product Equal Or Better In Every Way To Its Human-Use Counterparts. However, Due To The Extra Liability Involved In Marketing The Product For Human Use, Officially We Are Required To Say That It’s Only For Pets.
Does It Contain Pesticides?
No, absolutely not. Our CBD for dogs is sourced exclusively from 100% USDA organic farms, so this is never an issue. Even though none of our ingredients have ever been exposed to pesticides, we still routinely have our phyto-cannabinoid oil tested by an independent lab for potency and the presence of any toxins/pesticides. You can see the results on the certificate of analysis found on our website. We’re a CBD brand you can trust!
Why Is Hemp Oil Added? Why Isn’t It 100% Concentrated?
Our PurCBD+ is diluted to the proper concentration for dog CBD oil. It must be diluted with hempseed oil or you would be trying to measure impossibly tiny doses (smaller than a fraction of a single drop). Hempseed oil is the perfect carrier oil for PurCBD+. Our 30ml bottles contain at least 125mg of CBD per bottle.
Why Does It Say Refrigeration Is Needed?
We recommend refrigeration out of an abundance of caution. Prolonged exposure to sunlight or heat can cause the oil to prematurely spoil. Heat above 160°F will cause the PurCBD+ to breakdown and become ineffective. Refrigeration is the simplest way to ensure the longest possible shelf life. For most people, however, refrigeration isn’t needed—it’s just ideal
Alternatives To CBD Oil for Dogs

Because CBD has been shown to improve health benefits, small dosages work well in daily Multi-vitamins and add a crucial element to botanical extracts designed to help with Digestion, Mobility, and Skin & Coat health.
A lot of our customers like stacking multiple CBD products together, and this is a brilliant way to care for your dog’s health. Just make sure to always calculate how much you’re giving. We help with that down below!
Alternatives to Pet CBD Oil
When you want your cat to take advantage of CBD’s wellness benefits, we recommend catnip-infused CBD oil.
Making high quality CBD products is all about making them work for you and your little, and sometimes, big loved ones. That’s why we made our CBD for horses into easy to give and dose pellets.
Is CBD safe to take with prescription medication?
Each case is unique, and you must consider your pet’s medical history. There are over 1500 prescription drugs for pets in the United States; each of them could interact in a different way with any supplement such as CBD. If your pet is on any prescription medication we recommend consulting with a veterinarian before administering any supplement, including our own. Our comprehensive dosing chart is the best place to start; the second page of the chart has a form to help you and your veterinarian coordinate the use of prescription meds with CBD.
With our 100% money back guarantee you can feel confident in trying CBD oil and other dog CBD products.
Does CBD ever replace prescription medications?
It all depends on your pet and the medicine being used. Currently, the FDA has only approved the isolated version of CBD for use by 1 pharmaceutical corporation. They spend approximately $1 million lobbying for special FDA regulations and back door politics. That’s why the FDA allows them to market isolated CBD cannabidiol as the cure to some rare forms of childhood epilepsy (btw: they charge each child $32,500 per year for their cure). Innovet Pet products do not purchase special favors or lobby any level of government, accordingly we are very limited with the claims that we can make. That’s also why we now have to say that none of our products are meant to treat, cure, or mitigate any disease. Always check with your veterinarian before starting, stopping, or adjusting the dosage of any prescription medication. Many drugs, especially anti-seizure medications, must be weaned off slowly or else withdrawal symptoms can occur.
Is CBD Oil Bad For Dogs?
All the available evidence indicates that long term use of the best CBD oils causes no side effects; however, CBD oil has only truly been available for pets for a couple years. The most common reason our customers cite for using CBD is to replace prescription drugs that have a known history of long term side effects. Always consult your veterinarian and use our dosing chart/schedule to coordinate the use of CBD with prescription medications.
Will CBD Oil For Dogs Help With Anxiety?
There is still ongoing research being done on the anti anxiety benefits of CBD for dogs, but it has been reported that it may help calm occasional anxiety. All dogs have different reactions to cbd oils which is why we ensure you with a money back guarantee in order to provide you confidence in giving your dog cbd.
Is CBD Safe To Use With Pregnant Pets?
While we are not aware of any specific issues regarding using PurCBD with pregnant pets. However, we must always advise that you consult your veterinarian before starting or stopping any medication or supplement with pregnant pets. Try our dog cbd oils with confidence knowing that you have a 100% money back guarantee.
Do Vets Recommend CBD Oil For Dogs?
The current research that is available to us in regards to using CBD Oil for Dogs varies greatly. Much of the research is focused on arthritis and anxiety but a lot of people use CBD for off-label uses. Check out this article for more info, “Vet’s on CBD: Is CBD Oil Approved?”
The Innovet Story
Matt and Dave started Innovet in 2005 making health care products for pets. By 2015, they had done some research on CBD but at that time, it seemed like a product that was just too good to be true. Matt set it aside, thinking that the hype simply couldn’t all be legitimate and never gave it another thought until Gordo became sick. Gordo was his bulldog who had been diagnosed with lymphoma. He went in for his first treatment and had a horrible reaction to his first chemotherapy. He wasn’t eating and wasn’t being himself at all. His health went downhill fast and Dave was desperate to get the necessary help for Gordo. He searched for everything and anything that might help with cancer-related symptoms, and CBD was again brought to his attention. He found some that looked good, paid extra for overnight shipping, and sadly, it arrived 5 days later – the same day that Gordo passed away, taking his last breaths in Matt’s arms. Subsequently, the CBD bottle was left sitting on a desk at the Innovet warehouse.
Matt’s dog, Maximus, was 16 years old, blind and also battling cancer at the time. He spent most of his days in a dog bed at the warehouse, so that Matt could keep him nearby at all times. In the hopes of ensuring that he had tried everything possible, Matt saw the CBD bottle and decided to give some to Maximus. At that point, Matt was almost certain that Maximus was close to death. He had no hope that it would help because Maximus was so old and hadn’t been able to stand up or eat on his own since Gordo had gotten sick. Matt simply couldn’t imagine losing Gordo and Maximus within days of each other but that fate seemed inevitable. 30 minutes later, Maximus was missing. Everyone at the warehouse all spread out in search of Maximus and found him in a part that he had never been in before. We were shocked to find that Maximus was alert, wagging his tail and eagerly trying to sniff out food. Matt brought him back to his dog bed where we discovered what happened: Maximus had stood up on his own, ate all his food and had ventured into the warehouse in search of more!! That was the day we knew that CBD wasn’t all hype, It really did work! Matt believes that CBD gave him more treasured months with Maximus having a good quality of life. His only regret is that he hadn’t learned about CBD sooner. Dave and Matt immediately went to work on sourcing the highest quality full-spectrum CBD from organic plants and shortly after PurCBD Oil was born. Throughout the last 5 years, we’ve proved that top quality CBD can be both affordable and easily accessible.
The Benefits Of CBD Oil For Dogs
The good news is that it can help with many of your dog’s health issues from allergies to cancer. The bad news is that the CBD industry for pets is still unregulated. That means the majority of pet owners might be getting ripped off.
So today I want to talk about all the good things CBD oil can do for your dogs. Then I’ll show you how to find the best product for your dog and talk about how to give it.
What Does CBD Oil Do For Dogs?
There’s a messenger system in your dog’s body called the endocannabinoid system. It helps regulate sleep, appetite, pain, the immune system and more. CBD impacts the activity of the messengers in this system and stimulates the nervous, digestive and immune systems, as well as the brain. And it can do this because the endocannabinoids in CBD are very similar to the ones found in your dog’s body.
That’s why the benefits of CBD can be deep and significant. And why CBD oil is the fastest-growing healthy plant in the world!
6 Ways CBD Oil Can Help Your Dog
Let’s take a look at common conditions where CBD can help dogs. And after I’ll talk about which CBD oil you should buy and general dosing information.
1. Dogs With Joint Problems
If your dog has joint pain, your vet might prescribe NSAIDs or other pain meds like Gabapentin. But NSAIDs can cause deterioration in joints and soft tissues … and they can damage your dog’s liver. Gabapentin can also cause kidney damage. Plus, it’s not all that effective.
CBD is a natural anti-inflammatory that doesn’t carry the same risk of side effects as drugs. It works by binding to CB1 receptors in the brain. These receptors stimulate the immune system to reduce inflammation. CB1 receptors also change the way the brain responds to pain.
CBD also binds to CB2 receptors found in the nervous and immune systems. When this happens, the body may produce more cannabinoids naturally. This helps reduce inflammation even more and reduce the pain associated with it.
In fact, researchers at Cornell University found that dogs taking CBD for arthritis were more active and showed a decrease in pain.
Some of the common people buy CBD Oil for dogs as an anti-inflammatory for joint problems include:
- Hip and elbow dysplasia
- Sprains and strains
- Torn ligaments (CCL)
2. Dogs With Cancer
Sadly, 50% of adult dogs will get cancer. Cancer is a massive health challenge for dogs, especially if they undergo chemotherapy or radiation.
Cancer researchers are always looking for new ways to treat cancer and release the pain and nausea that can go with it. And CBD has been extensively researched as a cancer-fighting substance.
A study in mice showed that CBD slowed the growth of mammary cancer cells. And in 2018, researchers found that CBD increased survival time in mice with pancreatic cancer. Other animal studies show CBD oil has cancer-fighting abilities and can slow the growth of tumors.
In another study, cancer cells became more sensitive to treatment with CBD. That means CBD can increase the effectiveness of conventional cancer treatments.
CBD also kills cancer cells by blocking their ability to produce energy. And it can stimulate the immune system to produce killer cells that cause death in cancer cells.
Researchers also found that CBD blocks a cannabinoid receptor called GPR55. This is important because GPR55 increased the growth rate of cancer cells in mice.
CBD oil can also help with nausea associated with many cancer treatments. And studies have shown CBD can significantly reduce cancer-related pain.
3. Dogs With Seizures And Epilepsy
It’s estimated that about 5% of dogs suffer from seizures. They can be terrifying for both dogs and their humans … and they can cause anxiety.
Most vets treat epilepsy and seizures with antiepileptic drugs. Common options are phenobarbital or potassium bromide. But these drugs are extremely harmful to your dog’s liver and other organs. And even if the drugs don’t cause unmanageable side effects, they don’t always work …
So researchers at Colorado State University got excited when they studied CBD as a treatment for epilspsy in dogs. A whopping 89% of dogs that received the CBD had a reduction in seizures.
In human trials, CBD even worked in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. In one study, 7 out of 8 patients saw a marked improvement within 4 to 5 months.
CBD reduces the frequency and severity of seizures because of how it interacts with the endocannabinoid system. It’s believed that abnormal electric charges of the neurons in the nervous system cause seizures. But CBD can bind to receptors in the brain … researchers speculate this can improve the functioning of the nervous system.
4. Dogs With Anxiety
Anxiety is a common reason dog owners turn to CBD. Anxiety can appear in different forms, including:
- Noise phobia
- Separation anxiety
Of course, there are anti-anxiety drugs available … but CBD is being studied for anxiety because it doesn’t carry dangerous side effects.
Most human users of CBD take it for pain, anxiety and depression. Over a third of these users report that CBD worked “very well by itself.” CBD has even helped manage anxiety and insomnia in children with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). And animal studies show its antidepressant effects aren’t just for people.
CBD can work quickly given directly by mouth when your dog gets stressed. It usually only takes 5 to 20 minutes to work. But CBD appears to be most beneficial for anxiety when given over a period of time. So if your dog is prone to stress, a daily dose might work best.
A 2012 study looked at stress in rats exposed to cats. The rats given repeated doses of CBD had less anxiety than those given a single dose.
Researchers aren’t certain how CBD relieves stress and anxiety, but it’s thought that it can help regulate serotonin. Serotonin is a hormone that regulates mood, social behavior, digestion, sleep and appetite.=
5. Dogs In Pain
Probably the most promising research on CBD is that done on pain. From nerve pain to arthritis, it works well … without the harmful side effects of pain medications.
CBD binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain and nervous system and this helps change the way your dog’s brain perceives pain. Plus, CBD can help manage the other symptoms that accompany pain, such as sleeplessness and nausea.
CBD can also help manage acute pain from injuries.
6. Dogs With Allergies
Allergies are on the rise in dogs. And they’re difficult to treat … so, sadly, allergies are a common reason dogs are euthanized. Skin conditions in general are one of the most frequent reasons for vet visits.
The endocannabinoid system is also found in the skin … and that’s good news for dogs with allergies. It means CBD can help relieve dry and itchy skin. And it can promote the growth of new healthy skin cells.
You can give CBD internally for allergies, or use it externally for hot spots or interdigital cysts.
Now that you know a bit more about WHY you would give your dog CBD oil to your dog, let’s about HOW to choose a good quality product.
How To Choose The Best CBD Oil For Your Dog
CBD (Cannabidiol) is a naturally found substance in cannabis and hemp. Both deliver amazing health benefits … but there are differences.
Cannabis (marijuana) contains a relatively large amount of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). THC is what causes the psychoactive activities of cannabis. It’s why marijuana can give a “high” or “buzz.”
CBD oil made from hemp contains much lower amounts of THC. To sell hemp legally, it must contain less than 0.3% THC. So while your dog can still enjoy the calmness and reduction in anxiety that CBD provides, he won’t get high. And that’s important … because you might enjoy the high, but your dog definitely doesn’t!
Your dog will also get the same pain-relieving and immune-supporting benefits from hemp CBD.
But not all hemp CBD products are the same …
1. Look For A Full Or Broad Spectrum Hemp
Check the label of your CBD product to make sure it’s full spectrum or broad spectrum.
This means your dog’s CBD oil contains not just CBD, but other important cannabinoids that occur naturally in full-spectrum hemp. This includes CBC (Cannabichromene) and CBG (Cannabigerol).
Researchers have looked at CBC for its …
- Cancer-fighting activities
- Ability to block pain and inflammation
- Positive effect on brain cells
CBG is also studied for its medicinal use. It can decrease inflammation in the digestive tract and it can protect nerve cells and the eyes. It also supports healthy bladder function and fights cancer cells.
A full-spectrum CBD oil will also contain terpenes such as limonene, alpha-pinene, and beta-pinene. These are also naturally occurring medicinal substances found in all hemp.
Together, cannabinoids and terpenes create the entourage effect. This happens when compounds in hemp oil work synergistically to boost the medicinal properties of hemp oil.
CBD extracted with CO2 (I’ll talk about this in a moment) pulverizes the terpenes. This will make them hard to detect in testing and they won’t show up on the Certificate Of Analysis …
… but they’ll still be there and will contribute to the CBD oil’s medicinal effects.
CBD extracted with solvents will better preserve the terpenes. So you will find them noted on the Certificate Of Analysis.
But I don’t recommend solvent extracted products, which leads me to my next point …
2. Make Sure Your Dog’s CBD Uses CO2 Extraction
There are two common ways to extract the CBD oil from the hemp plant:
As you’ve probably guessed, CO2 extraction uses carbon dioxide to extract oil from the plant. Using a high-pressure chamber, CO2 puts pressure on the hemp. This breaks down the hemp and releases the oil.
This method of extraction creates oils with a higher concentration of CBD. That means your dog will get more from his supplement. Of course, that also makes the product more expensive … but it’s better than the alternative.
The cheapest way to extract oil from the hemp plant is with solvents, such as …
- Petroleum products
But residue from these solvents will be in the product and they can be toxic to your dog.
Some CBD extraction uses natural solvents, such as ethanol or olive oil. This is much safer for your dog but these oils can destroy the hemp plant’s waxes and the resulting oil isn’t as beneficial.
3. Look For A Certificate Of Analysis
If your dog’s CBD oil doesn’t have a certificate of analysis (COA), run away!
A certificate of analysis is a document that shows the amount and type of cannabinoids in the CBD product. And it usually comes from a third-party laboratory,
COAs protect your dog from poor quality products and the manufacturer should have one for each batch of hemp. If there isn’t a COA on the company’s website, you’ll want to ask for one before you buy any CBD oil.
When looking at the COA, there are 5 important things to look for.
CBD Is The Same As Advertised
This is more common than you would think … in fact, we were once tricked by this!
What you might see is something like “500 mg CBD” on the product label. But don’t take the label at face value! Make sure the COA says the same amount as the label does.
Some lab tests express the CBD content in mg/g. So to calculate the amount of CBD, you need to know how many grams are in the bottle of CBD.
For example, let’s say the COA shows 16.9 mg/g CBD. To calculate how much CBD is in the product, multiply the number of mg/g by the number of grams the bottle weighs. (A typical 1-ounce dropper bottle of CBD will weigh 30 grams.) This will give you the total mg of CBD in the bottle. In this example, it’s 507 mg (16.9 mg/g x 30 gram bottle).
CBD Is Really Full Spectrum
Again, never take the label at face value! Some CBD is from isolate, which means it won’t have other important cannabinoids and terpenes.
Remember the entourage effect? You won’t get this extra boost with CBD isolate. So how do you find out if your dog’s CBD is from isolate? The COA will show that the product only contains CBD and no other cannabinoids. Stay away from these products.
There’s Not Too Much (Or Too Little) THC
If your dog’s CBD contains more than 0.03% THC, it’s probably marijuana and not hemp. It’s not legal and your dog won’t enjoy the psychoactive effects.
You also want to avoid products with zero THC. If there’s none, then your dog’s CBD is from isolate … and the health benefits will be fewer.
A Third-Party Did The Tests
Once again, never take the manufacturer’s word that the product is high quality. Make sure the product was properly tested by a third party lab. Unfortunately, the CBD industry isn’t regulated, which leaves you vulnerable to poor products.
There’s No Contaminants
You need to know where and how the hemp that’s used to make the CBD oil is grown. This plays a huge role in those test results you see in the COA.
Always look for an organic product to reduce any environmental toxin risks. You want to know that the soil and water it’s grown in is as clean as possible. That’s because hemp plants are really good sponges and can absorb contaminants as they grow. And it’s why heavy metal toxicity can be a concern when looking at CBD oils.
So be sure that you check the COA for any contaminants such as pesticides, heavy metals and solvent residues.
Cost Shouldn’t Be A Priority
It can be hard to compare products and some people give up and look at costs only …
… but this is not the best approach!
You want a high-quality and safe product for your dog. Extracting CBD from hemp requires a lot of plant material as well as careful monitoring.
If the product you’re considering has a price that’s significantly lower than the competition, there’s probably a reason for that …
But the most expensive doesn’t mean it’s the best CBD oil for dogs …
Instead, consider what we’ve reviewed …
- How was the CBD oil extracted? (CO2 is best.)
- Is the CBD concentration different than advertised? (CBD on COA should match the bottle.)
- Is it full-spectrum? (The product should have other cannabinoids, not just CBD.)
- Is the THC content worrisome? (THC should be less than 0.3% but higher than 0%.)
- Is it organic? (Hemp is a sponge for contaminants.)
- Was it third party tested? (If you can’t find a COA online, ask the manufacturer for one.)
These variables are what you need to look for when determining the quality of a product. The cost is never a sure sign of a product’s quality.
Side Effects Of CBD Oil For Dogs
The American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association surveyed dog owners. They wanted to see what, if any, side effects they noticed. And the great news is that there weren’t any major effects reported.
The most consistent side effects noticed were:
- Sedation 19%
- Overactive appetite 5%
- Lack of energy 4%
- Panic reactions 2.7%
- Dry mouth/excessive drinking 2.3%
- Nausea 1.7%
- Vomiting 1.7%
- Increased seizures 0.69%
- Impaired mental functioning 0.68%
This means the most likely side effect you may see is that your dog gets sleepy. And that isn’t a bad thing. Especially if your dog suffers from seizures, anxiety, or has any pain, and you’d like to give CBD oil a try …
… but some CBD oils will have other additives and may not be safe.
Caution With CBD Oil Additives
You want to be sure there are no chemical additives or preservatives in the product you buy. These will cancel out the health benefits, even if the hemp is grown organically.
Also be aware of companies who have added essential oils (EOs) to their CBD oil. Even though they’re “natural,” EOs can affect animals profoundly.
If your holistic vet has recommended using a CBD oil with an EO, then follow her dosing recommendations. She’ll know what’s best for your dog’s unique health needs.
Some will recommend using CBD with frankincense as it’s good for tumor reduction in cancer patients. But always check with your holistic vet or herbalist first.
Dogs Taking Other Medications Or Supplements
If your dog is taking any other medications or supplements you will want to check with your holistic vet as well. CBD oil has many health benefits but it can change how your dog metabolizes some medications or supplements.
Researchers have looked at how CBD oil changes metabolism in humans. It can be similar to grapefruit, which causes significant reactions. So if your dog is taking any of the following medications you’ll need to ask your vet about dose changes:
- Allergy medications
- Liver or kidney medications
- Heart medications
- Anxiety medications
Hopefully, your holistic vet has helped you find alternatives to the medications above. But even then … CBD can affect herbs and natural supplements.
This doesn’t mean you can’t give your CBD oil if he uses other supplements or medications. You may just need to make adjustments. CBD changes the metabolism of other things but sometimes for the better! Meaning you can use less of another product or skip on the medications altogether.
And less is often more.
CBD Oil Dosage For Dogs
Each bottle of CBD has a specific concentration expressed in milligrams (mg). Most dogs are okay with the taste, so you can just put it on your dog’s food.
Dr Robert Silver recommends giving your dog 0.05 to 0.25 mg/pound of body weight, twice daily. He also suggests starting with a lower dose and working your way up. If 0.05 mg/pound is enough, stay at that dose. There’s no need to increase unless the lower dose stops working. If that happens, increase the dose to 0.125 mg/pound, twice daily and only continue to increase if your dog needs it.
For anxiety or health prevention, you’ll usually find that the lower doses work well. But if your dog is dealing with pain or immune issues, you’ll probably need a larger amount.

About CBD for Dogs
The mission of the Pet Releaf brand is to change what healthy means for pets. By providing the highest-quality pet CBD oil we are doing just that.
Grown at hemp farms
in the United States
Herbicide and Pesticide Free
From Seed to Sale, From Plant to Pet
The dedicated employees at Pet Releaf have made it a mission to change what healthy means for pets and deliver a “better way” to support common health challenges by using pet CBD oil. We view our pets as equal members of the family, and to us, that means providing them with products that may help support them in living a happy and comfortable life. At Pet Releaf, we manufacture and sell CBD for dogs, cats, and other animals because we believe in providing your pets with CBD products for a lifetime.
We believe in healing from the inside out and that starts with paying close attention to what exactly we are putting into our pets’ bodies. Our philosophy is that it’s not only important to start our pets on the right dietary regimen but also to incorporate extra outside elements to make them that much stronger.
Our pet CBD products, such as our very popular USDA Certified Organic Hemp Oils, are made from hemp oil extracted from hemp family farms in the United States. Through utilizing the entire hemp plant, extracting the oil using a supercritical CO2 method, and making products using all-natural ingredients, we have created human-grade products that provide positive results for animals.
With so many positive health benefits of pet CBD oil, we quickly learned that by taking advantage of the full spectrum of cannabinoids offered by the hemp plant, and not just CBD, Pet Releaf products are effectively activating your pet’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS). What happens when the ECS is turned on? It’s the only time 2-way communication (homeostasis) is happening within the body. Full spectrum CBD allows your pet’s brain to eliminate the guesswork on where their body needs more support.
When taking Pet Releaf CBD for pets, the body is able to tell the brain exactly where it’s needing more help and assistance. Because of this, Pet Releaf products may support a normal inflammatory and immune system response.
